Prevođenje slanga s hrvatskog na engleski na primjeru romana Svena Popovića "Uvjerljivo drugi"

This thesis comprises fiveannotated translations, accompanied by a discussion.Excerpts from three books were translatedfrom English into Croatian (This is going to hurt: Secret diaries of a junior doctorby Adam Kay, The Translation of Children's Literature: A Reader by Gillian Lathey, Quantitative Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies by Christopher Mellinger and Thomas Hanson), and twofrom Croatian into English (Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) by Antoni Cetnarowicz, Uvjerljivo drugi by Sven Popović). The discussionfocused on the issue of translating slang terms in fiction from Croatian into English. The aim of the discussion was to highlight major problems encountered by translators of literary works which abound in slang terms, and to provide several strategies translators can use to solve those problems. In the first part of the discussion, a theoretical framework of slang was given, while the second part focuses on the examples from Uvjerljivo drugiand the strategies used to translate problematic slang terms from Croatian into English.Furthermore, the discussion focused on the importance of language in characterization and the ways of ensuring that the translation affects the characterization as little as possible.Key words: slang, fiction, literary translation, characterizationRad se sastoji od vlastitih prijevoda različitih tekstova i rasprave na temu prevođenja slanga u književnim djelima na primjeru romana "Uvjerljivo drugi" Svena Popovića. Ovaj diplomski rad sastoji se od pet anotiranih prijevoda i rasprave. Dijelovi iz tri tekstaprevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski (This is going to hurt: Secret diaries of a junior doctorAdamaKayja, The Translation of Children's Literature: A Reader Gillian Lathey, Quantitative Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies ChristopheraMellingeraiThomasaHansona), a dijelovi iz druga dva teksta s hrvatskog na engleski (Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) AntonijaCetnarowicza, Uvjerljivo drugi SvenaPopovića). U raspravi se provodi analiza prevođenja slenga s hrvatskog na engleski jezik na primjeru romana Uvjerljivo drugi.Cilj rasprave bio je istaknuti glavne probleme s kojima se suočavaju prevoditelji književnih djela koji obiluju slengom. Nakon prvog dijela, u kojem je dana definicija slenga, u drugom se dijelu na primjerima iz romana prikazuju strategije koje prevoditeljikoriste pri prevođenju slenga. Pri odabiru strategija u obzir se uzima i utjecaj prijevoda na karakterizaciju likova
